A true story of a daring young couple's perilous escape from slavery.
Ellen Craft, daughter of a slave master and a slave, is light-skinned enough to pass as Caucasian as she makes her way north “for health reasons.” With her dark-skinned husband William acting as her “slave”, the couple travel to Pennsylvania, encountering unexpected dangers and bitter scenes of irony among white travelers. Rejoicing upon arrival in Philadelphia, they soon fall victim to racial discrimination that persists today.
