WORLD WAR ONE POSTERS

The posters were designed to appeal to emotions and influence behavior by persuading citizens of the justness of the war and encouraging enlistment, purchase of Victory Bonds, support for the Red Cross, and other contributions to the war effort. Representative of advancements in printing techniques and materials at the time, the works include those of such artists as James Montgomery Flagg, whose well-known "I Want You for U.S. Army" poster with its finger-pointing image of Uncle Sam remains a recognized symbol of patriotism.
